Unclaimed property waits for owners to claim it

North Platte businesses and organizations have some unclaimed property in the state treasurer’s office, waiting to be distributed to the proper owners.

North Platte Feeders has money there, as does the North Platte Public Schools, the city of North Platte, Great Plains Health, and other businesses and individuals.

Only the rightful property owner is told how much money awaits them. The public can only see the name of the property owners, and an amount that is either less than $250 or more than $250.

Unclaimed property comes from cash, gift cards, financial accounts, unpaid life insurance benefits, uncashed checks and other items. The funds land in the hands of the state when the owner has not initiated activity for several years.

In 2022, the Nebraska Treasurer returned a whopping $18 million in unclaimed property to the rightful owners, and the state treasurer wants to continue to do so.

“The staff of the Treasurer’s Office Division of Unclaimed Property are there to help you get what is yours. This is your money, and it should be returned to you,” Nebraska Treasurer John Murante said. “It’s quick, it’s easy, and it is free.”

On average, one in seven people in the United States have unclaimed property, according to the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators.

Last year, NAUPA declared Feb. 1 as National Unclaimed Property Day, encouraging residents to request their property that is currently held by the state.

For example, a bank account containing $7.82 that someone forgot about was closed by the bank, due to inactivity. The bank didn’t keep that money. It was reported to the state and the state made it available to the rightful owner, keeping it secure until it is claimed.
